How can I tell if the mould is inside the sealant?
Rub the black mark with a damp cloth. If it stays exactly as dark and the surface feels smooth, the discolouration usually sits beneath the surface of the silicone. On a close-up video we can often judge it as well.
Do you replace the sealant as well?
No, that falls outside what we do. If new sealant is the only real fix, we say so beforehand, so you do not pay for cleaning that will not work. Cleaning the tiles around it can still be worthwhile.
Can I go over the sealant with a scouring pad myself?
Better not. A scouring pad roughens the surface of the sealant, and moisture and dirt then cling to those tiny scratches even more easily. A soft brush and patience with the contact time work better.
