Should trickle vents always be open?
In most homes that is the idea, winter included, because they provide a small but constant flow of air. If draughts bother you, set them half open rather than fully closed. A closed vent in a room with mould is one of the first things we would change.
What is the difference between a trickle vent and a tilt window?
A trickle vent usually sits above the glass and always lets a little air through when open. A tilt window is a small pane you angle open and gives more air, but it also cools the surroundings more. Both help, as long as you use them and keep them clean.
How do I keep the vents clean?
Vacuum them now and then with a brush attachment and wipe them with a damp cloth. A vent full of dust lets less air through, even when open. Ideally do it a few times a year, for instance when you are cleaning the windows anyway.
