Can you go on my flat roof?
If the structure carries it and it is safely reachable, yes. Where the load-bearing capacity is in doubt we decline: a roof that looks fine can be rotten under the covering and you cannot see that from above.
Why is the drainage more important than the roof itself?
Because standing water attacks the covering and adds weight. A clean roof surface with a blocked outlet is more dangerous than a dirty one that drains properly.
Does the gravel have to come off?
Only around the outlet where it is blocking it. Removing all the gravel is a roofer’s job and usually unnecessary; what we do is clear the places the water has to escape through.
