How do I see which backing my carpet has?
Lift a corner. Jute is brown, coarsely woven and fibrous; a synthetic backing is smooth and even. That difference sets how much water may be used.
What happens if jute gets too wet?
It shrinks and pulls the carpet out of square, and sometimes browns through to the surface. Drying does not reverse that, so we work there with limited moisture.
Can water reach the subfloor?
Through a synthetic backing, yes, if too much is used. On a timber subfloor that is a problem only visible weeks later, which is why we recover immediately.
