Why do I see light and dark patches on my velvet chair?
Usually that is the pile lying differently in places, for instance where someone sits often. It is not dirt. After cleaning we brush the fibres in one direction, which often narrows the difference, though fabric that has been sat flat for years keeps some signs of use.
Can velvet handle water?
A little, yes. A lot, no. Too much moisture mats the fibres and can leave rings. That is why we work velvet with a low moisture dose and let every seat dry undisturbed before anyone sits on it again.
Do I need to do anything before you arrive?
Put the chairs somewhere we can reach all the way round and take off any loose cushions. Please do not attack a stain on velvet with a wet cloth yourself, because rubbing flattens the pile and that is harder to put right than the stain.
