Why is the top of the backrest dark?
Because you grab the chair there at every meal. Skin oil from your hands soaks into the fabric or settles on the wood, and dust sticks to it. So it is grease, not an ordinary stain.
Will the grip spot get as light as the rest?
It usually comes a long way. If the fabric there has already worn thin or discoloured, a difference stays visible. That is wear, and cleaning cannot undo it.
How do I prevent that dark band?
Take hold of the chair by the frame or the side rather than the middle of the top edge, and wipe that spot once a month with a slightly damp cloth. That removes the grease before it soaks in.
