Does cotton shrink when it gets wet?
It can if it gets soaked, which is why we keep the moisture low and vacuum dry between passes. Fixed upholstery pulled tight over the frame shows shrinkage sooner than a loose cover, so there we are especially sparing.
What are those brown edges you sometimes see?
Cotton and other plant fibres can discolour along the drying line when they get too much water. The moisture carries substances from the fibre or the filling to the edge and leaves them there. Drying quickly and evenly prevents it.
Is a cotton sofa harder than a synthetic one?
Not harder, but less forgiving of mistakes. Synthetic fabric tolerates a wet treatment more easily; cotton asks for more patience and less water. The result can be just as good, the work simply goes more calmly.
