Why does a patch where squash was spilled turn grey?
A thin film of sugar stays in the fibre. It is sticky, and whatever lands on it clings: dust, crumbs and grease from hands. The grey is therefore dirt stuck to the sugar, and it only goes once the sugar itself is dissolved.
Can I remove it myself with a damp cloth?
A fresh patch can largely be blotted up with lukewarm water and a cloth. Rubbing makes it worse, because it works the sugar deeper into the fabric. Once the patch has gone grey or hard, a cloth will no longer get it out of the filling.
Does blackcurrant colour stay behind?
That depends on the fabric and how long the syrup has been there. On synthetic fabric the colour often lifts well, on cotton or linen less reliably. We run a test first and then tell you honestly how much is likely to remain.
