How can I tell myself whether it is fading or dirt?
Lift a loose cushion or look at the underside of the seat. If that fabric is clearly darker or brighter than the side by the window, sunlight has faded the colour. If they match, it is dirt.
Can a faded armchair be dyed again?
That is not something we do. We clean upholstery and do not restore colour. For dyeing or re-covering, an upholsterer is the better choice. Cleaning beforehand can still make sense, so no dirt ends up under new colour.
How do I stop the chair fading further?
Move the armchair out of full sun, turn it a quarter now and then, or lay a throw over the sunny side during the hours the light hits it directly. That keeps the difference between the two sides limited.
